Chapter Eleven

I moved to stand beside Logan, my arm rubbing against his. In contrast to my own shaking, Logan was rock solid as he leveled an equally icy gaze back at Kevin.

“Hey guys!” Mikey said, bouncing in behind Kevin, holding a famous Whistler Bear Claw — a sticky, delicious pastry that usually required more than one person to finish it. He stopped short when he saw his friends’ faces. “Woah, what’s going on here, guys?”

“I was about to ask Kevin here the same thing,” Logan replied.

Kevin scoffed. “You’re in my room, digging around in my things, and you have the nerve to say that to me?” He marched over and bent to pick up the papers from the floor, gathering them into his arms. When he turned away, I saw red splotches behind his ears.

“Are you going to explain yourself?” Logan asked in a commanding voice.

Mikey, who’d finally finished chewing his mouthful of sticky pastry, hopped into the conversation. “About the movie? Did you finally tell him?”

Logan’s eyes went wide. “Mikey knew about this?”

Kevin gave Logan a look indicating he should know better than to ask. “Come on. Mikey knows everything around here.”

Logan turned to the shorter man. “And you didn’t think to tell me?”

“Alright, alright,” Kevin said, his voice less defensive now. “As you just found out, Shawn got me a part in Gabe’s latest film. Nothing more, nothing less.” He trained his eyes on Logan. “I was waiting for the right time to tell you about it.”

Logan shook his head. “I’m not buying it. Did Gabe know?”

“Of course, Gabe knew.” Kevin chuckled to himself.

Logan cleared his voice and took a step forward. “But did Gabe know you were going to take his part?” he spat back.

Kevin stilled, and Mikey stuffed another bite of Bear Claw into his mouth.

“Shawn had everything under control, Logan. There’s nothing dramatic going on here.”

I could feel the heat coming off Logan, he was fuming now. As I scrambled to piece together all the moving pieces, something struck me as odd.

“Kevin, how did Shawn convince the studio to hire you for the lead role? I’m not even in the industry, but I know that I’d go see a movie with Gabe in the lead, no matter what it was about. But I’d never heard of you before last night. Where’s the start value in hiring a no-name actor for a big release?”

Mikey’s eyes went wide, and he immediately began patting Kevin’s back. “Hey, hey. She doesn’t mean that, buddy. You heard her, she’s not in the industry,” he nervously comforted his friend.

Meanwhile, Kevin’s chin slowly lifted in the air. “I’ll have you know that I am a very talented actor,” he said, indignant. “I could have, should have, had Gabe’s career. It’s my time to shine.”

“So I heard,” I replied. “But how would you convince anyone else to come see a blockbuster with a no-name as the lead? You must know some very powerful people. How are they going to market that?” I asked.

“Unless …” Logan said the word slowly, as if something had just occurred to him.
